Occupational Therapist helping a patient with strength training

Strength & endurance training

Strength refers to the ability to overcome resistance, this could be added external resistance or gravity itself. Paresis (muscle weakness) is a key physical impairment in neurological conditions limiting mobility resulting right after prolonged hospitalization, after a stroke, nerve impairments, or any progressive neurological disorders.

Resistance training has been found to improve muscle strength and functional performance when added to functional exercises. The benefits include:

  1. an increase in muscle strength & endurance
  2. increases muscle fiber size
  3. increases neural recruitment
  4. improves connective tissue function
  5. improves bone health
  6. improves motor skill and confidence to engage further in functional activities
  7. improved mobility.

Our team of occupational therapists find unique & creative ways to help facilitate strengthening, suitable, and accommodating to the patient’s interests & needs enabling functional independence and improving quality of life.
